Flamingo Travel-Bonaire
By Flamingo Lover | March 25, 2008
Hope you find what you are looking for here. It is not anything typical to be found for flamingo travel. This is not a travel site, unless you truly love pink flamingos.
I am a flamingo lover who has typed in flamingo for any area that I was planning to travel to and waited to see what I could find. It has been the best travel guide that I could have chosen.
Bonaire, I found was well documented with the best place to dive. I felt I was the only person to make Bonaire as my destination because it is one of the breeding grounds of the pink flamingo and I wanted to see where flamingos live in the Caribbean.
Bonaire is located in the chain of islands referred to the ABC islands for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. It is part of the Dutch Netherland Antilles in the Caribbean. Getting there from the states is actually not that long of a flight from Miami, Florida. Travel there varies and helpful information is available at BonaireFlights.com.
The pink flamingos can be seen in the wild at the salt ponds at Pekelmeer Sanctuary and also at Washington Slagbaai National Park. You will need to rent a vehicle to get there. Most of the Bonaire auto rentals are fairly rough and all terrain type (not comfort riding) due to the mini safari you will be going on to get back to the pink birds’ habitat.
Though it is a bumpy ride, the sea of wild natural pink flamingos is worth the adventure. Bonaire Resorts can range from modest dive resorts, private apartments to more luxury hotels. You can almost be assured that you will have pretty tropical water views from most locations. The people are delightful and friendly.
Nightlife was not over the top, but if you are snorkeling, diving and flamingo watching during the day, you won’t have much energy for evening partying. One night was especially memorable as a donkey leisurely walked us back to our hotel. Yes, donkeys wander the island freely and all we met were friendly too. They were freed from work in the salt pans when replaced by machinery.
If you are flamingo lover, you will know you made the right choice with this destination when you arrive at Bonaire’s “Flamingo Airport”. Be sure to order cocktails almost anywhere and be thrilled when they come decorated with the best “pink flamingo cocktail stirrers” to save as free flamingo souvenirs.
