Seeing Live Pink Flamingos

By Flamingo Lover | February 19, 2008

Some flamingo lovers may have started collecting flamingos by accident, without the benefit of seeing real live pink flamingos.  I have chosen a wonderful location that is easy to find in Florida to go and enjoy live flamingos, Homassasa Wildlife Park.

These flamingos were transported as babies from Miami’s Hialeah Race Track. Homosassa Park is perfect to enjoy close encounters with pink flamingos and lends itself to capturing flamingo pictures.

You may be surprised at how noisy these graceful animals are. They honk constantly while they go about their daily routine of eating and preening. If you have children, this park is delightful as it is very laid back, with inexpensively priced admission. It is a pleasant change from some of the hyper state of Disney World, Sea World and the like.

If you are visiting grandparents, they can come along for a relaxing pace for a pleasant family experience. In addition to the pink flamingos, you can also see roseate spoonbill birds.  I kind of think of these spoonbill birds as cousins to flamingos.  They share the same gorgeous coloring, though much shorter and their bills are as amusing as flamingo’s legs are.

The flamingo birds also have manatee nearby to see. There are shows and education about the manatee. Children get the opportunity to learn about the manatee and their fragile existence.

Homosassa is located about 90 minutes north of Tampa and about the same distance west of Orlando.   You can pack a lunch (not like Disney World) and picnic outside the park’s entrance and further economize the trip.  flamingo pictures If you don’t have family or friends that you are staying with, you can find local info at www.homosassaspringsresort.com.

If you are in or around Citrus County or Hernando County in Florida and want to see flamingos, this is the place. Truly, something to be enjoyed for all ages.
